About the Author

Catarina Lilliehöök was born in Stockholm, Sweden in 1964. Keen to experience other cultures travelling soon became a natural part of life. She has for long periods of time extensively explored the world and/or lived in different countries, mainly the US, Europe, Australia, New Zealand and Asia.

Catarina PortraitAt the University of Stockholm she obtained a degree in political science. Work as a freelance journalist and editor was followed by studies in Chinese at the University of Stockholm, as well as at Beijing Language University and Beijing Normal University in China.

In 2004 she wrote the book Rediscovering China (Chinese title: Blond hair Blue eyes looking at China: Jinfa biyan kan Zhongguo , 金发碧眼看中国 ), which was published by one of China’s most well known publishing companies: Wenlian Chubanshe (文联出版社). The book is written for a Chinese audience, aiming at broaden the perspectives on Western mentality and the Western way of living. Also available in Japanese, Rediscovering China defines and ties in the cultural differences between East and West.

In 2006 she wrote the book MEI WENTI! INGA PROBLEM! OM LIVET I DAGENS KINA, which was published by one of Sweden’s largest publishing companies: Natur och Kultur. The book, depicting the author’s life in China, contains facts as well as personal anecdotes from an exciting time in one of the world’s most dynamic countries.

Catarina Lilliehöök has lived in China since 2001 and is fluent in written and spoken Mandarin. She spends her time doing freelance writing for Chinese newspapers and occasionally giving talks on cultural differences and/or language learning. Her current hometown is Shanghai.
